What Is a .psd File?
PSD is the native file format for Adobe Photoshop, the world's most widely used professional image editing software. PSD files preserve all Photoshop features including layers, masks, adjustment layers, smart objects, layer styles, blend modes, channels, paths, shapes, and text layers in a fully editable format. This makes PSD the working format of choice for designers, photographers, and digital artists who need non-destructive editing workflows. PSD supports color depths up to 32 bits per channel across RGB, CMYK, Lab, Grayscale, and Duotone color modes, with file sizes that can reach several gigabytes for complex multi-layered compositions. The format includes embedded ICC color profiles, EXIF metadata, and thumbnail previews. While PSD is a proprietary format, its specification has been partially published by Adobe, enabling third-party applications like GIMP, Affinity Photo, and Photopea to open and edit PSD files with varying levels of feature support. For files exceeding 2 GB, Adobe created the PSB (Large Document Format) variant.
