.ai File — Adobe Illustrator Artwork

AI is the native file format for Adobe Illustrator, the industry-standard vector graphics editor. AI files store vector artwork using a modified version of the EPS (Encapsulated PostScript) format or, in modern versions, PDF-based internal representation. The format preserves all Illustrator features including artboards, layers, appearances, effects, live shapes, gradient meshes, pattern fills, symbols, and type on a path. AI files can contain both vector and embedded raster content, with vector elements remaining infinitely scalable. The format supports CMYK, RGB, spot colors, and Pantone color definitions, making it essential for professional print design, logo creation, illustration, and brand identity work. AI files are typically used as working files during the design process, with final output exported to formats like SVG, PDF, EPS, or PNG for distribution. While the format is proprietary, many design tools including Inkscape, CorelDRAW, Affinity Designer, and Sketch can open AI files with varying compatibility, especially when PDF compatibility mode is enabled in the AI file.
