What Is a .jpeg File?
JPEG and JPG are identical file formats — the only difference is the file extension length. The .jpeg extension is the original, full-length extension, while .jpg became common due to the three-character extension limitation in older DOS and Windows 3.1 file systems. Both extensions refer to the same JPEG compression standard (ISO 10918) developed by the Joint Photographic Experts Group. Files with either extension use the same DCT-based lossy compression algorithm, support the same color modes and quality levels, and are processed identically by all software. Modern operating systems and web browsers treat .jpg and .jpeg as completely interchangeable. The dual extension situation occasionally causes confusion in web development and file management, but there is no technical difference whatsoever between the two. Convention varies by platform and tool — digital cameras and Windows applications tend to use .jpg, while some Linux tools and web standards sometimes prefer .jpeg. Both are equally valid MIME type image/jpeg identifiers.
