.png File — Portable Network Graphics

PNG (Portable Network Graphics) was developed in 1996 as a patent-free replacement for the GIF format after the Unisys LZW patent controversy. PNG uses lossless compression, preserving every pixel of the original image without any quality degradation. The format supports up to 48-bit true color and 16-bit grayscale, with an optional alpha channel for smooth transparency effects — a major advantage over GIF's single-color transparency and JPEG's lack of any transparency support. PNG is ideal for screenshots, logos, icons, UI elements, digital art, and any image where sharp edges and text must remain crisp. The format includes gamma correction for consistent display across different monitors and support for embedded text metadata. PNG files are typically larger than equivalent JPEG files for photographic images but produce noticeably better quality for graphics and illustrations. PNG supports interlaced loading (Adam7 algorithm) for progressive display. The format has become the standard for web graphics requiring transparency and is universally supported across all browsers and platforms.
