TIF is simply the shortened file extension for TIFF (Tagged Image File Format). The .tif extension originated from the 8.3 filename limitation in MS-DOS and early Windows systems that restricted file extensions to three characters. Both .tif and .tiff extensions are completely identical in format, features, and compatibility — they reference the same file specification.
