What Is a .eps File?
EPS (Encapsulated PostScript) is a standardized graphics format for exchanging vector artwork, illustrations, and page layouts between applications. Based on Adobe's PostScript language, EPS files contain self-contained PostScript code that describes vector shapes, text, and optionally embedded raster images. Each EPS file includes a bounding box definition specifying the image dimensions, making it suitable for embedding in page layout documents. The format was the standard for professional print production throughout the 1990s and 2000s, used extensively for logos, illustrations, clip art, and advertisements. EPS supports CMYK and spot colors essential for commercial printing. Most EPS files include a low-resolution preview image (TIFF or WMF) for display in applications that cannot render PostScript directly. While EPS has been largely superseded by PDF and SVG for modern workflows, it remains important in legacy print systems and stock image distribution. EPS files can be resolution-independent for vector content, allowing scaling to any size without quality loss.
