What Is a .ps File?
PostScript (PS) is a page description language and programming language developed by Adobe Systems in 1982. PostScript files contain instructions that describe the appearance of printed pages including text, vector graphics, and raster images using a stack-based interpreted language. It was revolutionary in enabling device-independent printing — the same PostScript file would produce identical output on any PostScript-compatible printer regardless of resolution. PostScript formed the foundation for the PDF format and remains important in professional printing and typesetting workflows. The language supports sophisticated features including arbitrary coordinate transformations, bezier curves, pattern fills, color management, and font manipulation. PostScript files are plain text and can be edited manually, though they are typically generated by applications. Level 2 PostScript added color separation and forms, while Level 3 added smooth shading and improved color management. The format remains in use in high-end printing, prepress workflows, and academic typesetting systems built on TeX.
