What Is a .ppt File?
PPT is the binary file format used by Microsoft PowerPoint from versions 97 through 2003. It stores presentation slides containing text, images, shapes, charts, tables, animations, transitions, speaker notes, and embedded multimedia in a binary OLE2 compound document structure. PPT files support master slides for consistent theming, custom slide layouts, and VBA macros for automation. The format was the dominant presentation format for over a decade and remains encountered in archives and legacy corporate systems. PPT files can be significantly larger than their PPTX counterparts due to less efficient storage of embedded media. The format supports linking to external data sources and embedding OLE objects from other applications. While Microsoft has moved to the PPTX format, PowerPoint maintains backward compatibility with PPT files, and most modern presentation software can read this format reliably.
