What Is a .odt File?
ODT is the word processing format defined by the OpenDocument Format (ODF) standard, maintained by OASIS and standardized as ISO/IEC 26300. Like DOCX, an ODT file is a ZIP archive containing XML files, but it uses a different XML schema designed for openness and vendor neutrality. ODT supports rich text formatting, styles, headers and footers, tables, images, footnotes, cross-references, and metadata. The format is the default for LibreOffice Writer and is supported by a wide range of word processors. ODT was designed with long-term document archival in mind, ensuring that documents remain accessible regardless of any single vendor's software decisions. Many governments and educational institutions mandate ODF formats for official documents to avoid vendor lock-in. The format continues to evolve with new versions adding features for annotations, digital signatures, and enhanced accessibility.
