What Is a .m2ts File?
M2TS (MPEG-2 Transport Stream) is the container format used for Blu-ray disc video content and AVCHD camcorder recordings. M2TS files extend the standard MPEG-2 transport stream format with additional timing and synchronization metadata specific to Blu-ray and high-definition recording. The container typically holds H.264/AVC video (the primary Blu-ray video codec) or MPEG-2 video, paired with high-quality audio streams in formats like Dolby TrueHD (lossless Dolby), DTS-HD Master Audio (lossless DTS), LPCM (uncompressed), or Dolby Digital/DTS (compressed). M2TS also supports PGS bitmap subtitles, secondary audio/video for picture-in-picture, and interactive content. Consumer AVCHD camcorders (Sony, Panasonic, Canon) record video directly in M2TS format. The files are found in the BDMV/STREAM directory on Blu-ray discs. M2TS files can be quite large — a full Blu-ray movie may span multiple M2TS files totaling 25-50 GB. Media players like VLC, mpv, and MPC-HC can play M2TS files directly, and they can be remuxed into MKV containers without transcoding using tools like MakeMKV or FFmpeg for easier playback and storage.
