.mpeg File — MPEG Video

MPEG and MPG are identical file formats using different extension lengths. The .mpeg extension is the full-length version while .mpg follows the three-character convention from DOS. Both contain MPEG-1 or MPEG-2 program streams with the same codec, container structure, and capabilities. The MPEG (Moving Picture Experts Group) standards represent foundational achievements in digital video compression that enabled the transition from analog to digital video across consumer electronics, broadcasting, and computing. MPEG-1 made digital video practical on CD-ROM and the early internet, while MPEG-2 powered the DVD revolution and digital television transition. All software and hardware treats .mpeg and .mpg extensions identically — the file headers determine the actual format version. MPEG files support multiple audio tracks, chapter markers, and closed captions. While modern H.264/H.265 codecs offer dramatically better compression, MPEG-1 and MPEG-2 content remains widespread in broadcast archives, DVD libraries, and legacy media collections. The formats are universally supported by media players and can be transcoded to modern formats using tools like FFmpeg or HandBrake.
