What Is a .wmv File?
WMV (Windows Media Video) is a video format developed by Microsoft as part of the Windows Media framework. WMV files use Microsoft's proprietary video codecs (WMV7, WMV8, WMV9/VC-1) in an ASF (Advanced Systems Format) container, often paired with WMA audio. WMV9/VC-1 was competitive with H.264 in compression efficiency and was adopted as a standard codec for HD DVD and Blu-ray disc. WMV was the dominant video format in the Windows ecosystem during the 2000s, used for streaming via Windows Media Services, purchased video from early digital stores, and encoding with Windows Movie Maker. The format supported DRM (Digital Rights Management) through Windows Media DRM, which was used by services like Amazon Unbox and MLB.tv. WMV files typically offered good quality at relatively low bitrates, making them popular for early internet video distribution. While WMV has been largely superseded by H.264/MP4 for new content, significant archives of WMV content exist from the 2000s era. Windows natively supports WMV, and cross-platform players like VLC handle the format reliably.
