What Is a .mts File?
MTS files are AVCHD (Advanced Video Coding High Definition) recordings captured by consumer camcorders from manufacturers like Sony, Panasonic, and Canon. The MTS format uses the MPEG-2 transport stream container with H.264/AVC video compression and Dolby Digital (AC3) or LPCM audio, recording at resolutions up to 1080p. AVCHD was jointly developed by Sony and Panasonic in 2006 as a high-definition recording format for consumer video cameras using hard drives, memory cards, and optical discs. MTS files contain the raw recording data and are typically found in the PRIVATE/AVCHD/BDMV/STREAM directory structure on the camera's storage media. The format maintains metadata for timecodes, recording dates, and camera settings. MTS recordings can be played directly by most media players and imported into video editing software for post-production. The relationship between MTS and M2TS is that MTS is the file extension used during recording while M2TS follows the Blu-ray naming convention, though the underlying format is essentially the same. MTS files can be remuxed to MP4 or MKV without transcoding for easier playback and sharing.
