What Is a .exr File?
OpenEXR is a high dynamic range (HDR) image format developed by Industrial Light & Magic (ILM) for use in visual effects and film production. Released as open source in 2003, EXR files support 16-bit and 32-bit floating-point pixel values that can represent an enormous range of luminance values — from deep shadows to brilliant highlights — far exceeding what standard 8-bit formats can capture. This makes EXR essential for compositing, color grading, and lighting in VFX pipelines where images must be combined and manipulated without losing detail in extreme tonal ranges. The format supports multiple image channels (not just RGB and alpha but arbitrary named channels for depth, motion vectors, object IDs, and more), multiple views for stereoscopic 3D, tiled storage for efficient random access, and various lossless and lossy compression methods. OpenEXR has become the industry standard for interchange of rendered images and HDR photography in film, animation, and game development. Major VFX software including Nuke, Houdini, Maya, and Blender all use EXR as a primary working format.
