What Is a .midi File?
MIDI and MID files are identical in format — they both contain Musical Instrument Digital Interface data. The .midi extension is the full-length version while .mid is the abbreviated form that originated from DOS's 8.3 filename convention. Both extensions store the same Standard MIDI File (SMF) data including note events, control changes, program changes, system exclusive messages, and tempo/time signature information. All MIDI-compatible software and hardware treat both extensions identically. MIDI files remain a cornerstone of music technology, used in everything from professional music production and live performance to karaoke systems, video game music, ringtones, and music education software. The MIDI 2.0 specification, released in 2020, adds higher resolution velocity, per-note controllers, property exchange, and backward compatibility with MIDI 1.0. MIDI files are also used in research for computational musicology, algorithmic composition, and machine learning applications in music generation. The small file size and structured data make MIDI ideal for analyzing musical patterns and training AI music models.
