What Is a .wma File?
WMA (Windows Media Audio) is a proprietary audio format developed by Microsoft as part of the Windows Media framework. Introduced in 1999, WMA was Microsoft's answer to MP3 and aimed to provide better compression efficiency, particularly at lower bitrates. WMA comes in several profiles: WMA Standard for general lossy compression, WMA Pro for multi-channel and high-resolution audio, WMA Lossless for bit-perfect compression, and WMA Voice optimized for speech content. At low bitrates (32-64 kbps), WMA Standard generally outperforms MP3, making it popular for streaming and early digital music stores. WMA supported DRM (Digital Rights Management) which was widely used by early online music services but also generated controversy when services shut down and purchased music became unplayable. The format was tightly integrated into Windows, Windows Media Player, and Zune devices. While WMA has largely been superseded by AAC and Opus for new content, vast libraries of WMA files exist from the 2000s era. Support has declined on non-Windows platforms, though VLC and other cross-platform players handle WMA files reliably.
