What Is a .mid File?
MIDI (Musical Instrument Digital Interface) files don't contain actual audio recordings but instead store sequences of musical performance data — note events specifying pitch, velocity, duration, and timing, along with control messages for instrument selection, volume, panning, and effects. Standardized in 1983, MIDI revolutionized music production by allowing electronic instruments, computers, and software to communicate using a universal protocol. Standard MIDI Files (SMF) come in three formats: Type 0 (single track), Type 1 (multiple synchronized tracks), and Type 2 (multiple independent tracks). MIDI files are extraordinarily small — an entire song might be just a few kilobytes — because they only store performance instructions, not audio samples. The actual sound produced depends on the synthesizer or sound module playing the file, which is why the same MIDI file can sound dramatically different on different devices. MIDI remains fundamental to modern music production as the primary communication protocol between DAWs, virtual instruments, hardware synthesizers, and controllers. General MIDI (GM) standardizes 128 instrument sounds for consistent playback across devices.
