What Is a .ogg File?
OGG is a multimedia container format developed by the Xiph.Org Foundation as a free and open alternative to proprietary formats. When used with the .ogg extension, it most commonly contains audio compressed with the Vorbis codec, though it can also contain FLAC, Opus, Speex, or Theora video streams. Ogg Vorbis provides lossy audio compression with quality comparable to or exceeding MP3 at equivalent bitrates, with particularly noticeable improvements at lower bitrates. The format uses variable bitrate encoding by default, automatically allocating more bits to complex audio passages and fewer to simpler ones. Ogg Vorbis is completely patent-free and open-source, which has led to its adoption in video games (it's the standard audio format in many game engines including Unity), open-source software, and streaming applications. The format supports extensive metadata through Vorbis comments. Major platforms including Spotify use Ogg Vorbis for their streaming service. Browser support includes Firefox, Chrome, and Edge. While OGG hasn't achieved the universal consumer recognition of MP3, it remains important in gaming, open-source ecosystems, and streaming infrastructure.
