How to Calculate a Tip
Tip amount = Bill × (Tip % / 100). For example, a $50 bill with 20% tip: $50 × 0.20 = $10 tip. Total = $50 + $10 = $60. To split equally among 3 people: $60 ÷ 3 = $20 per person.
This calculator does all of that instantly. Enter the bill amount, choose or enter a tip percentage, and optionally set the number of people to split. You'll see the tip amount, total with tip, and per person amount.
Tip Etiquette and Percentages
Tip customs vary by country and context. In the US, 15–20% for sit-down restaurants is standard. Buffets or counter service might be 10–15%. For bars, $1–2 per drink or 15–20% of the tab. Hotel housekeeping, valet, and other services have their own norms.
The quick tip buttons (10%, 15%, 18%, 20%, 25%) cover most scenarios. Use the custom field when you need a specific percentage or want to round to a nice number.
Splitting Bills Fairly
When dining with others, splitting the bill evenly is common. This tool divides the total (bill + tip) by the number of people. Everyone pays the same amount. For groups where people ordered different items, some prefer to calculate individual totals — that requires manual math or a more advanced splitter.
For equal splits, enter the full bill, your chosen tip, and the number of people. The per person amount tells each person exactly what to pay.
