What Is a .rm File?
RM (RealMedia) is a proprietary multimedia container format developed by RealNetworks for streaming audio and video over the internet. RealMedia files contain streams encoded with RealVideo (video) and RealAudio (audio) codecs, which were designed for adaptive streaming over dial-up and early broadband connections. RealMedia pioneered internet streaming in the mid-1990s through the RealPlayer application and the RTSP (Real Time Streaming Protocol). At its peak, RealPlayer was installed on hundreds of millions of computers, and RealMedia was the dominant streaming format for online radio, news clips, and entertainment content. The format supported multiple bitrate streams in a single file for bandwidth adaptation. However, RealNetworks' aggressive bundling practices, intrusive software, and the rise of competing technologies (Flash Video, Windows Media, eventually HTML5 video) led to RealMedia's decline. RM files from this era remain in some archives. RMVB (RealMedia Variable Bitrate) was a popular variant for file-based distribution, particularly in Asian markets. VLC and FFmpeg can play and convert RealMedia files reliably.
