.numbers File — Apple Numbers Spreadsheet

Numbers is Apple's spreadsheet format used by the Numbers application on macOS and iOS. Unlike traditional grid-based spreadsheets, Numbers uses a canvas-based approach where multiple tables, charts, images, and text blocks can be arranged freely on a page. The file is a ZIP archive containing Protobuf-encoded data, preview images, and embedded resources. Numbers supports formulas compatible with common spreadsheet functions, conditional formatting, pivot tables, interactive charts, and smart categories for organizing data. The format integrates deeply with the Apple ecosystem through iCloud syncing and Handoff between devices. While Numbers is primarily designed for the Apple platform, it can import Excel files and export to XLSX, CSV, TSV, and PDF formats.
