What Is a .md File?
Markdown is a lightweight markup language created by John Gruber and Aaron Swartz in 2004. MD files contain plain text with simple formatting syntax — headings use hash symbols, bold uses double asterisks, links use square brackets and parentheses, and code blocks use backticks. Markdown was designed to be as readable as possible in its raw form while being convertible to HTML and other formats. The format has become ubiquitous in software development for README files, documentation, blog posts, and technical writing. GitHub, GitLab, Stack Overflow, Reddit, and countless other platforms support Markdown rendering. Several extended flavors exist including GitHub Flavored Markdown (GFM) with tables, task lists, and strikethrough; MultiMarkdown with metadata and citations; and CommonMark as a standardization effort. Markdown's simplicity and readability have made it the lingua franca of technical documentation, replacing more complex markup languages like reStructuredText and DocBook for many use cases.
