What Is a .dts File?
DTS (Digital Theater Systems) is a multi-channel surround sound audio codec used in cinema, Blu-ray, and home theater systems. DTS Core supports 5.1 channels at up to 1.5 Mbps with lossy compression, while DTS-HD Master Audio provides lossless compression for up to 7.1 channels at bitrates up to 24.5 Mbps — delivering bit-perfect reproduction of the studio master recording. DTS was originally developed as a competitor to Dolby Digital, first appearing in the film Jurassic Park in 1993. DTS files extracted from disc sources contain the surround sound audio tracks from movies and music. The codec family includes DTS Core (basic lossy surround), DTS-HD High Resolution (improved lossy), DTS-HD Master Audio (lossless), and DTS:X (object-based immersive audio similar to Dolby Atmos). DTS audio is mandatory on Blu-ray disc players and widely supported by AV receivers and soundbars. In file-based media, DTS audio streams are commonly found in MKV containers alongside H.264 or H.265 video. DTS has been integrated into car audio systems, headphones (DTS Headphone:X), and streaming services as a premium audio format for immersive entertainment experiences.
