What Is a .divx File?
DivX is a video codec brand associated with MPEG-4 Part 2 (early DivX) and later H.264/HEVC compression. DIVX files contain video compressed with the DivX codec, typically in an AVI or MKV container. The original DivX codec emerged in 2001 and was based on MPEG-4 ASP (Advanced Simple Profile), achieving remarkable video quality at low bitrates that made it possible to compress a full DVD movie to fit on a single CD (700 MB). This capability made DivX synonymous with the digital video revolution of the early 2000s, driving widespread adoption in file sharing and consumer electronics. DivX-certified DVD players became common, playing DivX files from CD and DVD media. DivX Inc. later developed DivX Plus HD (H.264-based) and DivX HEVC for 4K content, along with the DivX Media Format (DMF) container. While the DivX brand has diminished in relevance as H.264/MP4 became the universal standard and streaming replaced file-based video, it played a pivotal role in democratizing digital video distribution and establishing the viability of compressed video for consumer use.
