.3g2 File — 3GPP2 Multimedia File

3G2 (3GPP2) is a multimedia container format defined by the 3rd Generation Partnership Project 2 for CDMA-based 3G networks (used primarily in North America by carriers like Verizon and Sprint). 3G2 is closely related to the 3GP format but was designed for CDMA2000 networks rather than GSM/UMTS networks. Like 3GP, 3G2 files contain video encoded with H.263 or MPEG-4 Part 2 and audio with AMR, AAC, or EVRC (a CDMA-specific speech codec) at low bitrates suitable for mobile network bandwidth. The format shares the ISO Base Media File Format foundation with MP4 and 3GP. 3G2 was commonly used for video recording and MMS messaging on CDMA phones in the United States, including early smartphones and feature phones from Samsung, LG, and Motorola. The format specifications include provisions for timed text, still images, and streaming. While modern smartphones universally use MP4/H.264 regardless of network technology, 3G2 files remain in archives from the CDMA era. All modern media players handle 3G2 files, and they can be converted to standard MP4 using any video conversion tool.
