What Is a .ttf File?
TrueType is a font format developed jointly by Apple and Microsoft in the late 1980s as an alternative to Adobe's PostScript Type 1 fonts. TTF files contain font outlines defined using quadratic Bézier curves, along with hinting instructions that optimize rendering at small sizes and low resolutions. TrueType fonts were designed to be scalable to any size while maintaining quality, and to render consistently across different devices and platforms. The format stores glyph outlines, character mappings (cmap), kerning tables, and extensive metrics data. TrueType became the dominant desktop font format for both Windows and macOS throughout the 1990s and 2000s. While TTF has been largely superseded by OpenType (OTF) for professional typography and WOFF/WOFF2 for web use, it remains widely used for system fonts, application embedding, and font distribution. TTF fonts can be used on the web by converting to WOFF/WOFF2 format, or served directly with appropriate MIME types. The format supports Unicode for international character coverage and can contain up to 65,536 glyphs. Variable TrueType fonts use the same .ttf extension but include variation axes for weight, width, and custom parameters.
