What Is a .eot File?
EOT (Embedded OpenType) is a web font format developed by Microsoft as a compact form of OpenType fonts for embedding in web pages. EOT was the only web font format supported by Internet Explorer before version 9, making it essential for cross-browser web typography during the IE-dominated era. EOT files apply MTX compression to TrueType outlines, URL binding (restricting font usage to specific domains), and subsetting (including only the glyphs needed for a page) to create smaller, more secure font files. The URL binding feature addressed font foundry concerns about web fonts enabling unauthorized redistribution. EOT was submitted to the W3C as a proposed standard but was ultimately rejected in favor of WOFF, which offered better compression, broader browser support, and a less restrictive licensing model. While EOT is now obsolete for modern web development (Internet Explorer was discontinued in 2022), it may still be encountered in legacy CSS @font-face stacks that include EOT as a fallback for older IE versions. The typical modern web font strategy uses WOFF2 as the primary format with WOFF as a fallback, omitting EOT entirely.
