What Is a .dxf File?
DXF (Drawing Exchange Format) is an open CAD data format created by Autodesk in 1982 for enabling interoperability between AutoCAD and other CAD programs. DXF files store 2D and 3D design data in a tagged-data format that can be either ASCII text (readable and editable) or binary (more compact). The format describes geometric entities, layers, text styles, dimension styles, blocks, and other drawing elements through a structured sequence of group codes and values. DXF has become the universal exchange format for CAD data — virtually every CAD, CAM, and GIS application can read and write DXF files. The format is used extensively in CNC machining, laser cutting, vinyl cutting, embroidery, architecture, and manufacturing where design data must be shared between different software systems. While DXF represents most AutoCAD features, some advanced DWG-specific features may not translate perfectly. DXF is also commonly used for importing vector artwork into CNC control software, sending designs to fabrication services, and archiving engineering drawings in an open format. The ASCII variant's human-readable nature makes it suitable for programmatic generation and parsing in custom applications.
