About South Sudan (SS)
South Sudan is the world's newest internationally recognized country, having gained independence from Sudan on July 9, 2011. Juba, the capital, is on the White Nile. The country's creation required updates to every country code database, timezone system, and geographic dataset worldwide β a real-world stress test for internationalization systems. The South Sudanese Pound (SSP) was introduced at independence to replace the Sudanese Pound. For developers, the SS country code and .ss domain were assigned in 2011, making South Sudan one of the most recent additions to ISO 3166-1. The en-SS locale handles English as used in South Sudan. The +211 calling code was carved out from Sudan's +249. South Sudan's emergence is a prime example of why country code systems must be designed for change β applications that hardcoded country lists or used static datasets had to be updated. The SS code also briefly raised questions about historical sensitivity, as SS has other well-known connotations in Western cultures.
