Twitter/X Character Limits
Twitter (now X) limits tweets to 280 characters. This includes spaces, punctuation, and emoji. URLs are a special case — regardless of length, each URL counts as 23 characters because Twitter shortens them to t.co links. The bio field has a 160-character limit.
Writers, marketers, and social media managers need to stay within these limits. A character counter that applies Twitter's URL rule gives you an accurate count before you post.
How URL Counting Works
When you paste a long URL like https://example.com/very-long-page-name, Twitter displays it as a shortened t.co link. For the character limit, Twitter counts it as 23 characters. This tool detects URLs (http, https, www) and applies the same 23-character rule so your displayed count matches Twitter's.
Using This Character Counter
Type or paste your tweet or bio text. The counter updates in real time. Switch between Tweet (280) and Bio (160) modes. You'll see total characters, words, URL count, and remaining characters. A warning appears when you're near or over the limit. All processing runs in your browser — nothing is sent to any server.
