Singapore Time

Singapore Time (SGT) is UTC+8 year-round. Despite being located at approximately the same longitude as Bangkok (UTC+7), Singapore uses UTC+8 to align with its major trading partners — China, Hong Kong, and Malaysia. This means Singapore's clock time is about one hour ahead of its solar time, resulting in later sunrises and sunsets. Singapore changed from UTC+7:30 (which more closely matched its longitude) to UTC+8 in 1982 to synchronize with Malaysia. The city-state is one of Asia's most important financial centers, with the Singapore Exchange (SGX) operating on SGT. Singapore's port is the world's second-busiest by cargo tonnage, and its Changi Airport is a major global hub. The country has attracted the Asia-Pacific headquarters of companies like Google, Facebook, and Dyson. Singapore's strategic position at the crossroads of major shipping routes and its UTC+8 timezone alignment with China make it the natural gateway to Southeast Asia. The Monetary Authority of Singapore (central bank) and numerous hedge funds, private equity firms, and family offices operate on SGT. Singapore's consistent timezone, zero-corruption reputation, and English-language business environment have made it the preferred regional base for multinational corporations.
