About New Zealand Time (McMurdo Station)

McMurdo Station, the largest research facility in Antarctica, uses New Zealand Time (NZST/NZDT) because it is supplied and staffed primarily from Christchurch, New Zealand, via US Air Force and Royal New Zealand Air Force flights. This practical choice means McMurdo observes UTC+12 in winter and UTC+13 during New Zealand's daylight saving time. Antarctica has no native population and no indigenous timekeeping tradition — each research station uses a timezone convenient for its logistics and communication. The Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station also uses NZST. Other Antarctic stations use different zones: the UK's Rothera station uses UTC-3 (to match the Falkland Islands), France's Dumont d'Urville uses UTC+10, and Russia's Vostok station uses UTC+5 (for coordination with Moscow, even though it is at 78°S latitude where the concept of solar time is essentially meaningless). McMurdo Station can house over 1,000 people during the austral summer research season (October-February) and about 200 during winter. The station has been operational since 1955 and is managed by the US Antarctic Program. During the six months of continuous daylight or darkness, time becomes a psychological construct as much as an astronomical one.
