PNG vs JPG: When to Use Each Format

PNG (Portable Network Graphics) supports lossless compression and transparency, making it ideal for logos, icons, screenshots, and graphics with sharp edges or text. JPG (JPEG) uses lossy compression and excels at photographs and complex images where small quality loss is acceptable for much smaller file sizes.

Choose PNG when you need transparency, crisp edges, or lossless quality. Choose JPG when file size matters and the image is photographic or has many gradients. Converting PNG to JPG is common when preparing images for web galleries, social media, or email where transparency isn't needed.

Handling Transparency When Converting to JPG

Since JPG doesn't support transparency, transparent PNG pixels must be replaced with a solid color. This tool lets you pick a background color — white is the default, but you can match your website background, use black for dark themes, or any hex color. The color is applied behind the image before conversion, so logos and icons with transparent backgrounds will render correctly on your chosen backdrop.

For images with soft transparency (alpha gradients), the conversion blends the PNG over your chosen background. For hard edges (fully transparent or opaque), the result is clean. Preview the result before downloading to ensure it looks right.

Quality Tradeoffs in JPG Compression

JPG quality is a slider from 1–100. Higher values preserve more detail but increase file size. Quality 92 is a sweet spot for web — most viewers won't notice the difference from 100, but file size can be 30–50% smaller. Quality 80 is acceptable for thumbnails; 60–70 may show visible artifacts.

For hero images and important visuals, use 90–95. For thumbnails, avatars, or decorative images, 75–85 often suffices. The tool shows the output file size so you can experiment and find the right balance for your use case.

Client-Side Conversion and Privacy

This converter runs entirely in your browser. Your PNG is read via the File API, drawn to an off-screen canvas with your background color, and exported as a JPG blob. No data is sent to any server. This approach ensures privacy, works offline after the page loads, and has no file size limits imposed by server upload restrictions. The only limit is your device's memory.
