What Is a .AppImage File?

AppImage is a portable application format for Linux that packages an application and all its dependencies into a single executable file. Unlike Snap and Flatpak which require daemon services and runtimes, AppImage files are completely self-contained — download the file, make it executable (chmod +x), and run it. No installation, no root privileges, no system modification required. AppImage uses a SquashFS filesystem image mounted via FUSE at runtime, containing the application binary, libraries, and resources. The format follows a "one app = one file" philosophy, making it easy to try applications, carry them on USB drives, manage versions by keeping multiple AppImage files, and remove applications by simply deleting the file. AppImageHub provides a community catalog of AppImage applications. The format is supported through optional desktop integration via appimaged, which creates menu entries and handles file associations. AppImage has gained popularity for distributing applications that need to work across multiple Linux distributions without repackaging — particularly useful for commercial software, nightly builds, and applications where users want the latest version without waiting for distribution packaging.
