About Eastern European Time (Kyiv)
Ukraine uses Eastern European Time (EET/EEST). The IANA timezone identifier was updated from 'Europe/Kiev' to 'Europe/Kyiv' in 2022 to reflect the Ukrainian spelling. Kyiv, the capital, is one of Europe's oldest cities and the historical center of Kyivan Rus. Ukraine's timezone puts it in the EET zone alongside Finland, Romania, and Greece. Before the ongoing conflict, Ukraine was developing rapidly as a major European IT outsourcing hub, with Kyiv, Lviv, and Kharkiv hosting thousands of software developers. Ukrainian tech companies and freelancers serve clients across Europe and North America, with the EET timezone providing good overlap with both markets. Ukraine historically used Moscow Time during the Soviet era and switched to EET after independence in 1991. The country follows EU DST rules, changing clocks on the last Sunday of March and October. Lviv, in western Ukraine, is culturally closer to Central Europe and physically closer to Warsaw and Kraków than to Kyiv. Despite the EET designation, Ukraine's large east-west span means solar time varies significantly across the country.
