About Nepal Time (Kathmandu)
Nepal Time (NPT) is UTC+5:45, the only timezone in the world with a 45-minute offset. Nepal does not observe DST. The unusual offset was adopted in 1986 to distinguish Nepal from India (UTC+5:30) and assert national identity — the 15-minute difference is a point of pride for Nepalis. Kathmandu, the capital, sits in a valley surrounded by the Himalayas at about 1,400 meters elevation. Nepal is home to eight of the world's fourteen 8,000-meter peaks, including Mount Everest (Sagarmatha), and its timezone governs the scheduling of mountaineering expeditions that draw climbers from around the world. The Nepal Stock Exchange (NEPSE) operates on NPT. Tourism, remittances from Nepali workers abroad, and agriculture form the backbone of the economy. Nepal's timezone creates unique challenges for flight scheduling with neighboring India (15 minutes difference) and China (2 hours 15 minutes difference). The Kathmandu Valley's UNESCO World Heritage sites, including ancient Durbar Squares and Buddhist and Hindu temples, operate on this distinctive offset. Nepal's position between the two most populous countries on Earth gives its timezone outsized geopolitical significance.
