Sri Lanka Standard Time (SLST) is UTC+5:30, the same offset as India. Sri Lanka has had an unusually complex timezone history — it used UTC+5:30 until 1996, then moved to UTC+6, then UTC+6:30 in 2006, before reverting to UTC+5:30 in April 2006. The changes were driven by a combination of energy saving attempts and coordination with India, the island's nearest neighbor and largest trading partner. Colombo is the commercial capital, while Sri Jayawardenepura Kotte serves as the legislative capital. The Colombo Stock Exchange operates on SLST. Sri Lanka is a major exporter of tea (Ceylon tea is world-famous), textiles, and rubber. The country's strategic position in the Indian Ocean, along major East-West shipping lanes, has made the Port of Colombo a significant transshipment hub. Sri Lanka's IT outsourcing sector has grown, leveraging English proficiency and the same timezone as India. The island nation's cultural heritage — ancient cities like Anuradhapura and Sigiriya — draws significant tourism. Sri Lanka's diverse ecosystems, from tropical beaches to cloud forests, are all within the SLST timezone.
