Brasília Time (São Paulo)

Brasília Time (BRT) is UTC-3 and serves as the official time for Brazil's capital and most populous regions. Brazil abolished daylight saving time in 2019 under President Bolsonaro, ending a practice that had been in place since 1931. Studies showed DST no longer produced significant energy savings due to changes in consumption patterns, particularly the widespread adoption of air conditioning. São Paulo, the largest city in the Southern Hemisphere with over 22 million in its metro area, is the economic engine of Latin America. The B3 (formerly BM&F Bovespa) stock exchange, one of the world's largest by market capitalization, operates on Brasília Time. Brazil actually spans four time zones (UTC-2 to UTC-5), but BRT covers the most populated and economically important regions including São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, and the capital Brasília. The timezone is 2 hours ahead of US Eastern Time, creating good overlap for business communication with North America and Europe. Brazil's position means it bridges working hours between the Americas and Western Europe.
