About Venezuela Time (Caracas)
Venezuela Time (VET) is UTC-4 year-round. Venezuela has one of the more unusual timezone histories in the Americas. In 2007, President Hugo Chávez shifted the country's clocks back 30 minutes to UTC-4:30, claiming it would provide a more equitable distribution of sunlight and improve citizens' metabolism and productivity. This made Venezuela one of only a few places in the world using a half-hour offset. In 2016, the government reverted to UTC-4 to save electricity during an energy crisis. Venezuela does not observe daylight saving time. Caracas, the capital, is situated in a valley at about 900 meters above sea level and serves as the country's economic and cultural center. Despite ongoing economic challenges, Caracas remains an important Latin American capital. Venezuela's timezone aligns with Atlantic Standard Time and is the same as Bolivia, much of Brazil's western regions, and the eastern Caribbean. The country's oil industry, once the backbone of the economy, operates on VET with global trading partners adjusting to the offset.
