About Zimbabwe (ZW)
Zimbabwe is a landlocked Southern African country sharing Victoria Falls with Zambia. Harare, the capital, is the largest city and economic center. Zimbabwe is famous β or infamous β for experiencing one of history's worst hyperinflation episodes, which saw the original Zimbabwe Dollar become worthless. The current Zimbabwe Dollar (ZWL, reintroduced in 2019) is the latest in a series of currency iterations. For developers, the ZW country code maps to en-ZW, sn-ZW (Shona), and nd-ZW (Ndebele) locales. The .zw domain and +263 calling code serve Zimbabwe's digital infrastructure. Zimbabwe's currency history is a legendary edge case for financial software β the country has used ZWD, ZWN, ZWR, ZWL, and in between adopted USD, ZAR, and a multi-currency system. Applications handling Zimbabwean financial data must account for this complex monetary history. The multi-currency system that existed from 2009-2019 where USD, ZAR, GBP, and other currencies were all legal tender is particularly challenging.
