About Suriname (SR)
Suriname is the smallest sovereign state in South America and one of only two non-Spanish/Portuguese-speaking countries on the continent (the other being Guyana). Paramaribo, the capital, has a UNESCO-listed historic city center reflecting its Dutch colonial heritage. Dutch is the official language, making Suriname unique in South America. The Surinamese Dollar (SRD) replaced the Surinamese Guilder in 2004. For developers, the SR country code maps to the nl-SR locale for Surinamese Dutch, one of few Dutch locales outside Europe and the Caribbean Netherlands. The .sr domain and +597 calling code serve Suriname. Suriname's Dutch-speaking status creates an unusual localization requirement in South America β while all neighboring countries use Spanish or Portuguese, Suriname requires Dutch. The country's multicultural population includes significant Hindustani, Javanese, and Maroon communities, creating additional multilingual considerations beyond Dutch.
