About Mauritania (MR)
Mauritania is a large, mostly desert country in northwest Africa, bridging the Arab Maghreb and Sub-Saharan West Africa. Nouakchott, the capital, is one of the largest cities in the Sahara region. The country changed its currency code from MRO to MRU in 2018 when it redenominated the Ouguiya, a change that affected many financial systems. The Ouguiya is one of only two currencies theoretically subdivided into fifths (1 Ouguiya = 5 khoums). For developers, the MR country code maps to the ar-MR locale for Arabic with RTL text support. The .mr domain and +222 calling code serve Mauritanian digital infrastructure. The 2018 currency redenomination from MRO to MRU is a real-world example of why currency code handling must be flexible β historical data may use MRO while current data uses MRU. Mauritania's position between Arab and West African worlds makes it a bridge market for pan-African localization strategies.
