About Liberia (LR)
Liberia is the oldest republic in Africa, founded in 1847 by freed American slaves. Monrovia, the capital, is named after U.S. President James Monroe. Liberia and the United States share a unique historical connection, reflected in Liberia's flag design. The Liberian Dollar (LRD) uses the $ symbol, which developers must distinguish from USD and other dollar-denominated currencies. For developers, the LR country code and en-LR locale handle Liberian English, which has distinctive characteristics influenced by American English and local languages. The .lr domain and +231 calling code serve Liberia's telecommunications network. Liberia is notably one of only three countries worldwide that have not officially adopted the metric system, which affects unit conversion logic in applications. The Liberian flag emoji ๐ฑ๐ท can be confused with the US flag in small rendering sizes, a UX consideration for flag-based country selectors.
