About North Korea (KP)
North Korea is a highly isolated East Asian country on the Korean Peninsula. Pyongyang, the capital, is the political and cultural center. North Korea has extremely limited internet access, with most citizens only able to access a domestic intranet. The North Korean Won (KPW) uses the ₩ symbol, shared with the South Korean Won. For developers, the KP country code maps to the ko-KP locale for North Korean Korean. The .kp domain is one of the world's least-used ccTLDs with only a handful of registered sites. The +850 dialing code is rarely dialed internationally. North Korea is one of the most heavily sanctioned countries — applications must implement strict sanctions compliance checks for KP country codes, blocking transactions and services as required by international sanctions regimes. The ₩ symbol ambiguity with KRW (South Korean Won) requires proper disambiguation. North Korea's extreme isolation makes it an edge case in nearly every international system.
